Last weeks cloudy and cooler weather got the Zoysia Patch active. There are a couple of active patches on 8. I use 8 fairway as one of my indicators to spray for patch. Usually we spray our first application the 2nd week in September, then 28 days later we apply our second application. Since we have had below average temps this summer I went on and got a head start today. The symptoms will fade fast this week because we are getting our true August summer heat. I plan on making two more applications. Today we sprayed Tebucanozole, Iron Man, Dispatch, and Turf Pigments. Preventitive application for zoysia patch are key to managing the disease.
Zoysia patch, caused by Rhizoctonia solani, is the most common disease of zoysiagrass in our region. Symptoms are most common in spring and fall as zoysiagrass enters or breaks winter dormancy. The patches range from just a few feet across to 20 feet or more. Circular areas of thin, tan zoysiagrass initially develop in late September to early October during cool, rainy weather and again in April and May. Leaf blades, particularly those near the patch edge, may develop a yellow orange color, causing an orange margin.
